Karanga Mask, Mossi People, Burkina Faso
Mossi People, Burkina Faso: Karanga Bird Mask with an elongated crest plume. Carved wood, incised with geometric patterns which are decorated with colored earth pigments, early 20th century. The eyes are incised through for vision; the outer rim of the ovoid head is incised with several worn-smooth holes for the attachment of costume elements. Some of the holes have stress fractures/wood losses. The inside of the facial area is patinated from use.
