Vincent van Gogh, Attributed: Jardin Arles
Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890) Attributed: Jardin Arles. ca 1888. Sepia ink on paper. Signed at the bottom, and framed. This item is accompanied by an unverified document of provenance. The subject of this drawing could be the public garden in the Place Lamartine which Van Gogh could see from the Yellow House. In his comments on another drawing from a series of drawings in a similar style, Ronald Pickvance made the observation that "the feathery round bulk, prominently placed in the small garden, was to attract Van Gogh more than any other single natural form during his stay in Arles. It recurs in some ten paintings and drawings (including those done in letters)" (R. Pickvance, Van Gogh in Arles [exhibition catalogue], The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1984, p. 64)..

Vincent van Gogh was a Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes and still lifes.

Approx. 16.5 x 11.5 inches; 22.25 x 19.5 inches framed.

Ex-collection of Baron Herbert Hischemoller van Kamphyzen, Netherlands and Beverly Hills, California. Acquired by a private collector ca. 1980. Acquired from above by the current owner in a private sale, ca. 2018.
