Caixa Cerimonial Baoule - - An antique Baoule divination box also referred to as a Baoule mouse oracle, originally from the Ivory Coast of Africa. The tribe soothsayer would use this pot in his consultations, believing that mice are in communication with the spirit of the earth and are aware of the future. Traditionally the soothsayer would enclose mice in the lower pot without food, over which he would place a small amount of millet and sticks, as the mice ate the millet they would move the position of the sticks giving the soothsayer a valuable message. Circa : Mid/Late 19th century. Condition: Used, small crack to one side, with a beautiful patina commensurate with age, good. Dim: 33cm (H)
