Louis-Félix Amiel
- An original Louis-Félix Amiel (1802-1864) oil on canvas painting depicting a dramatic scene from the 1821 Epsom Derby.
Louis-Félix Amiel (1802-1864) was an artist born at Castelnaudary (Aude) in France. Originally a pupil of the artist Baron Gros, and is most well known for his portrait painting but also specialised in equestrian subjects.
This dynamic painting appears to be his version of the famous 1821 Epsom Derby, England, with elements based on the painting "Le Derby de 1821 à Epsom" (1821) by the French artist Théodore Géricault - currently exhibited in the Louvre Museum.
It features the famous race horse "Gustavus" which was the first "Grey" to win the race.
Housed in an ornate gold coloured frame. With previous auction stickers to the rear.
Signed to the lower right.
Circa 1830s to 1850s
Condition: some minor repairs and retouching commensurate to age frame not original. Small wear to edges from a previous frame. Minor historical insect damage to wood - Treated.
DIM: frame 110x73cm high / canvas 92.5x56cm
