Leilão Bidspirit | Circle of Anton Raphael Mengs

Circle of Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779) - Mary Magdalene, penitent. Oil on canvas. 109 x 89 cm. Smooth frame of the nineteenth century in gilded wood. The subject represented Mary Magdalene penitent is a variant or version of the various originals that Anton Rafael Mengs must have painted of the Saint from 1760 (Museo Nacional del Prado, ref. P002205, 110 x 89 cm; Patrimonio Nacional, Palacio Real de Aranjuez, inv. 10079189, 110'5 x 88'5 cm; Roma, Accademia di San Luca, inv. 169, 115 x 92'5 cm). On the original stretcher of the work, in 18th century handwriting, there is an inscription possibly of authorship of the work, along with a rubric, which reads: ”Soy de Bonifacia Gil” (I am from Bonifacia Gil). It is a work worthy of in-depth study. Provenance: Spain, Carrillo de Albornoz family.
