Louis XIII and Anne of Austria, kings of France

The subjects of these two paintings are Louis XIII (Fontainebleau 1601 - Saint-Germain-en-Laye 1643), king of France and Navarre, and his wife Anne-Marie Maurice of Austria and Austria-Styria (Valladolid 1601 - Paris 1666), queen consort of those kingdoms.

Louis XIII married in 1615 with Anne of Austria, until then Infanta of Spain and Portugal, daughter of the king of Spain Philip III, fruit of the marriage agreement signed in Fontainebleau in 1611, with the purpose of agreeing the future marriage between Philip, then Prince of Asturias and future king Philip IV, with his first wife Isabella of Bourbon (1602-1644).

These two paintings must respond to a relevant institutional commission of the time, a chronological space between the year of the marriage 1615 and 1643, death of the French monarch.

Both kings appear with hunting clothes, with their muzzleloading weapons and accompanied by their hounds, reason why the portrait of the queen appears in the detailed study that the outstanding specialist in ancient weapons Xavier Sala i Aragó made of the weapon that the queen carries (CATALUNYA I LES ARMES DE PRESTIGI. ARMES DE FOC 1550-1850. Ed. by the author, December 2014; p. 235 and reprod).

The authorship of the two paintings is found among Madrid painters related to the Court between 1615-1643, as we commented, continuers of Juan Pantoja de la Cruz (c. 1553-1608) and his circle, as in the case of Bartolomé González (c. 1564-c.1628), Rodrigo de Villandrando (c. 1588-1622), Felipe Diricksen (1590-1679) or Pedro Antonio Vidal (1570-?) among others.

Measurements of each painting: 204 x 105 cm (canvas); 214 x 115 x 5 cm (frame).
