GERMAN ILLUSTRATION ENGRAVING BY FRITZ EICHENBERG
Fritz Eichenberg, German, American, 1901 to 1990, wood engraving on paper, The Temptation of St. Anthony, 1965. Signed in pencil lower right. Titled, dated and numbered 38 of 100 in pencil, lower left. Framed. Fritz Eichenberg is known for Modernist figure painting, illustration, graphics, teaching. Fritz Eichenberg was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1901. He worked as a printers apprentice and studied at the Municiple School of Applied Arts in Cologne, and at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig. He began his career as a graphic artist and illustrator in 1923, working for various publications and as an independent illustrator. He also served as the head of the art department at University of Rhode Island, and laid out the printmaking studios there. Eichenberg illustrated myriad books in the U.S. and abroad.
