ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX TIKHVIN MOTHER OF GOD ICON
An antique Russian icon of Mother of God with Jesus Child in Tikhvinskaya iconography. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. Circa: late 18th century to early 19th century. Theotokos of Tikhvin is one of the most celebrated Orthodox Christian icons that is said to be one of the icons written by St. Luke the Evangelist. Since the 14th century, the icon was held in Tikhvin, where eventually Tikhvin Assumption Monastery was founded to host the icon. Religious Christian Collectibles, Russian Icons.
