An antique British aquatint on paper, Fox Hunting, Plate 3, The Run, 1852 after John Frederick Herring Sr., British, 1795 to 1865. Published by Mess Foress, London, 1852. Inscribed in the plate, lower right and left. Titled in the plate, lower to the center. Additionally inscribed in the plate, lower right and left. marked in the print, lower to the center. John Frederick Herring Sr., also known as John Frederick Herring I, was a painter, sign maker and coachman in Victorian England. Famed for his lively depictions of race horses and agricultural scenes. He is widely considered one of the best animal painters of his time alongside other artists focusing on the genre, such as Sir Edwin Landseer. Herring often depicted on equestrian sporting events rendered in warm hues with smooth, sensitive brushstrokes, as well as other farm animals such as cows, ducks, and goats.
