ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX SAINT MICHAEL ARCHANGEL ICON
An antique 19th century Russian Orthodox icon of Saint Michael the Archangel on horseback. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board with kovcheg. Titled in Church Slavonic, upper to the center. It is believed that it is the Archangel Michael who stands guard over the law of God and constantly fights the dark forces for each of us. He also guards the gates of Paradise, as indirectly evidenced by the crown with floral ornaments, sometimes found on his images. Russian Religious Items and Antique Collectibles.
