Attributed to Varvara Fyodorovna Stepanova, Russian, 1894 to 1958, mixed media painting on paper depicting an abstract female figure. Unsigned. Inscribed in pencil, V. Stepanova, on the backside. Varvara Fedorovna Stepanova is a Soviet avant garde artist, representative of constructivism, designer and poet, wife and colleague of Alexander Rodchenko. She also worked and exhibited under the pseudonym Varst. Alongside her husband Alexander Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova played a pivotal role in advocating for revolutionary ideals over traditional aesthetic values.
