SELJUK BRONZE SPIKED MORTAR AND PESTEL
Ca. AD 900 - 1100An Islamic Seljuk mortar cast from bronze. The pestle is made via the lost wax technique that features intricate foliate decoration with protruding tear shaped leaves. The stocky, round-bottomed mortar has tall walls and a flared rim and is embellished with incised Arabic inscriptions. The tapered conical pestle has a large and globular head. Both components exhibit a thick, green patina atop areas of smooth, dark brown patina. Size: 140mm x 160mm; Weight: 6.8kgProvenance: Property of a London Islamic art specialist collector; previously in a collection formed since the 1980s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.This piece is accompanied by a historical report from Alessandro Neri, an international Cultural Heritage expert based in Florence, Italy.
