ROMAN BRONZE LEGIONARY GLADIUS SHAPED PENDANT
Ca. AD 100 - 300.A Roman Legionary pendant shaped as gladius with a double edge blade tapering to the point. It has a double ridge guard and a spherical pommel. Gladius was a Latin word for sword, and is used to represent the primary sword of Ancient Roman foot soldiers. Early ancient Roman swords were similar to those of the Greeks, called xiphos.Size: 45mm x 12mm; Weight: 12gProvenance: Private UK collection; previously acquired on the Belgian art market in the 1990s.
