The painting is from the Breton period of Pont-Aven (1885-1886) and comes from an illustrious family in Catania. It was purchased in the 1950s and has all the typical characteristics of the author's sketches. The work reflects the efficiency of the painter who used to take annotations and drawing notes for the preparation of major works, using sketches drawn in pencil and completed in tempera, watercolor, and pastel.

The painting is significant in that it shows how the painter highlighted the simplicity of the subjects and the naturalness of the province, which represented a world of peace and harmony in contrast to the dynamism of industrialization in Paris during that time. In Brittany, the painter found the "primitive" he was looking for and developed his own pictorial language, cloisonnisme, named for the clear delimitation of chromatic parts. There are numerous examples of this expression in his work, starting with watercolors or pastels on pencil drawings, from which he then created the definitive work on canvas in oil, where the lines are delimited and marked by highlighting the colored areas. This gives the graphic line autonomy, like a colored surface set with signs.

Additionally, the painting showcases the impressionistic luminescent chromatism and the oriental motifs of the umbrellas, specifically Japanese, which reflect the research and attempts of Gauguin in his pursuit of coloristic investigation to bring color to shine through the intensity of light and sunshine in Brittany.

Similar works include "Young Bretons Who Dance" (1888) at the Rijksmuseum Vincent Van Gogh in Amsterdam, "Girotondo among Young Bretons" (1888) at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and "The Yellow Christ" (1889) at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo.
