Pierre-Philippe Thomire Mantle Clock
Antique marble mantle clock attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire (French, 1751?1843) with probable date in first quarter of the 19th century. The shape of a Medici vase is decorated with Neo-Classical friezes containing ovals, palm fronds, leaves and garlands, and two women in ancient draped garments. The lid of the clock is finely perforated, with a pinecone on the top. The figure of Mercury is on the green marble base, which rests on four gilt feet. Examples of Thomire's work are displayed at the White House, Washington DC, the Louvre, France and the Royal Collection, Great Britain. Approx. dimensions 18? H x 7? W x 7? D exclusive of lid. This item has experienced some loss to finish, body is in need of structural tightening, and has some other loss in keeping with age. Corner of marble base is chipped. Clock has not been tested, but appears in overall good condition.
