Miniature depicting the birth of Shri Vallabhacharya Northern India, Rajasthan, Mewar, 19th century Meas: 15.8 X h. 8.5 cm - Small painting depicting the episode of the birth of Vallabha, an Indian saint and philosopher who presumably lived between 1479 and 1531 CE. It is said that he was born into a South Indian family that moved to Varanasi at the time when his mother was pregnant with Vallabha. In the holy city she gave birth to the child, but he appeared to be dead and was abandoned under a tree. That night Lord Krishna appeared in a dream to Vallabha's parents warning them that their son was alive. The next day they found him healthy and protected by a circle of fire. Vallabha is known to have founded the Vallabha sampradaya school which had a significant impact on the Vaishnava tradition and continues nowadays to be followed by many devotees.
