Provenance: Italian private collection.
The art of the Mumuye was 'discovered' relatively late, around the end of the 1960s. Sculptures like this were used for divination and medicine. In the villages they were kept in common places intended for the initiation of adolescents, and in private homes to remember important people of the ethnic group.
