VENETIAN FOUNDRY, XVI-XVII CENTURY
Caesar with lorica
Bronze with coating. Marble pedestal from the nineteenth century. 37,5 x 13,5 x 13,5 cm with marble base; 26 x 14,5 x 10 cm just the statue
This bronze can be compared to a statuette preserved in the Hermitage depicting a Roman emperor with lorica and a laurel crown on his head. It is part of a series of Emperor statues and the size is basically identical.
The two armigers are very much alike due to the armor, the posture and the texture of the casting.
This item is particularly noteworthy for its splendid translucid coating, naturally emerging from within the original artifical coating, darker and bituminous.
