FOUNDRY FROM THE VENETIAN AREA NEAR PADUA, XVI-XVII CENTURY
Kronos
Coated bronze. 28 x 8 x 8 cm with marble base; 19 x 7,5 x 6 cm without
Marvelous statue of antiquarian taste depicting the god Kronos.
It could be compared to the one preserved in Padua's Musei Civici (inv.n.10); the only difference is that our piece is 1cm bigger and that his arm, holding the scythe, is positioned slightly higher.
Nevertheless, the handiwork is identical, as well as the thick and lumpy material, typical of Paduan productions.
Padua's Musei Civici has traditionally attributed this work to Tiziano Aspetti, however recent studies have severely denied this possibility. The original piece, as well as all the others inspired by it, are now thought to be the work of anonymous foundry that looked up to Aspetti's artistry.
