A British War Medal and Mercantile Marine War Medal Pair - Named to Frederick Brown. Brown was a donkeyman (engine room mechanic) aboard HMHS Llandovery castle - a hospital ship - and was killed aged 32 when the ship was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-86 on 27th June 1918, in contravention of the rules of war. The commander and officers of the German submarine were later prosecuted for this war crime which had included the machine-gunning of survivors in the lifeboats. A poignant and historically significant pair of medals in outstanding EF condition with original silk, watered ribbons, together with some biographical details and a detailed account of the sinking of the Llandovery Castle and its aftermath.
