Group of three medals named to Captain F J Steward Royal Artillery, consisting of the British War Medal the Victory Medal and the Territorial Force War Medal.
Frederick James Steward was born on 28 September 1895 in Wolverhampton. He was appointed to a commission as 2 Lt in the Royal Field Artillery (3rd North Midlands Brigade, Territorial Force) on 5 August 1915 and was posted to France on 27 March 1916, joining the 232nd Brigade RFA and taking part in the assault on Gommecourt on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He served in France until
the end of hostilities; post war he joined the new Auxiliary Air Force, the reserve component of the RAF, and gained his pilot’s licence at the Midland Aero Club on 23
September 1928. He married Dorothy Vaughan on 22 December 1920 and had two sons. He died on 1 January 1981 at Poole, Dorset, aged 85. With a copy of his
Medal Index Card and various other documents (with potential for further research). Medals mounted on a card backing for display, with original full length silk ribbons.
