Fr. Jerónimo de Azambuja (†1563), also known as Oleastro, religious of the Order of Saint Dominic, of which he was provincial, was one of the most prominent theologians of the 16th century. Deep knowledge of the Latin and Greek languages, he participated in the Council of Trent where he was noted for his opposition to any type of innovation; as chief inquisitor (1555) he practiced the greatest violence and cruelty. Original edition of his main work, the “Comentários ao Pentateuco”, divided into five parts or books, the first printed by João Barreira and the rest by João Blávio de Colónia. The commentary on the second book of the Pentateuch was the first to be printed by João Blávio de Colónia (fl. 1554-1563), the last German printer to settle in Lisbon. Copy slightly trimmed (occasional damage to the printed marginalia), with slight moisture stains (from the tide), but overall clean. Full sheepskin binding, from the 20th century, certainly from the workshop of Mestre Império Graça, with blind decoration on the covers, in the style of the period (spine with slight wear).
