Rare translation into the vernacular of one of the best-known works of a humanist scholar, poet and jurist (1450-1524), born in Spalato, Dalmatia (today Split, Croatia), who lived the last years of his life in isolation to dedicate himself to the study of Theology. It is also an important 16th century Portuguese species, with an interesting xilograph arrangement of the title page, of which there are two variants (see BN, 495/496). The present copy appears, however, to be a mix of both, as it has the last page numbered 295, a single section and some foliation errors common to both variants. A cropped copy, with slight browning, but overall solid and clean. Rhombus stamp of the House of Lafões, on the title page (slightly damaged by the trimming on the lower margin). Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (lot nº 4279 from the auction held in 1940, with entry in the name of the translator). Binding from the first half of the 20th century, with blind tooling on the covers and inlays, gold decorate spine and carmine edges. Anselmo, 513. Samodães, 1792. National Library (16th Century), 495/496. Biblioteca de D. Manuel II, 165.
