Notes: 1. The ascription to Philipp Peter Roos, called Rosa de Tivoli (c. 1655-1706) is supported by the expert-restorer Carlos Ramires, who proceeded to clean both canvases in 2014; 2. Philipp Peter Roos called Rosa de Tivoli (c. 1655-1706), was born in Frankfurt am Main having learned painting from his father, landscape painter Johann Heinrich Roos. He was hired as a painter by Charles I, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, who greatly appreciated him and who financed his trip to Rome in 1677, where he lived and would die in 1706. In Rome, he worked in the studio of Giacinto Brandi, whose daughter he married after converting to Catholicism. In 1683 he joined the Congregation of Virtuosi al Panthéon, papal guild of painters. In 1684 he acquired a large Villa in Vicolo del Riserraglio in the San Paolo district of Tivoli, near Rome, from where his nickname was derived. In 1691 he returned to Rome, where he would die, in poverty, in 1706. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philipp_Peter_Roos; 3. The possession mark in the name of D. Caetano de Portugal may correspond to D. Caetano Maria José Baltasar de Paula Portugal and Castro 1824-1893, the fifth son of the 4th Marquis of Valença or to his grandson and namesake D. Caetano Maria Baltasar of Portugal and Castro 1880-1962.
