Charles Blunt (1803–1878) – The Sun's Place in the Ecliptic – Hand-Coloured Aquatint Engraving (1842)
This antique astronomical illustration titled "The Sun's Place in the Ecliptic" (No. 54) was published in The Beauty of the Heavens by Charles Blunt in London in 1842. The engraving depicts the sun’s annual journey along the ecliptic path through the twelve signs of the zodiac, arranged in a circular band. At the center, the sun is shown in radiant yellow, surrounded by Earth’s orbital plane and four shaded globes marking key positions in its cycle. Each zodiacal sign is represented by a detailed hand-coloured symbol, emphasizing both scientific function and visual clarity. This plate reflects the Victorian aim to blend education with artistic elegance in presenting astronomical knowledge.Charles Blunt (1803–1878) was a British educator and scientific writer best known for his contributions to popular astronomy.
