Journey to the East - Eretz Israel and its Surroundings, Paris 1886-1887 - Printed Photographs

In Orient, Récits et Notes d'un Voyage en Palestine et en Syria, by Abbe Raboisson (Pierre Auguste Raboisson). Published by Librairie Catholique de l 'Oeuvre de Saint-Paul, Paris, 1886-1887. French. Two volumes. Original half-leather bindings with gilt inscription in the spines.

The journey of the French scholar Pierre Auguste Raboisson to Palestine, Egypt, Sinai and Syria described in two volumes. The two volumes of the book together include 163 (out of 164) prints made based on photographs from the period, of typical figures in traditional dress, landscapes, and important sites in the Land of Israel and its surroundings, as well as maps. Among the maps: map of Sinai, map of Jerusalem, map of the Land of Israel, and more.

Pierre Auguste Raboisson spontaneously photographed the landscapes he encountered. Robinson wrote that all the prints that appear in the book were made based on photographs he took during his journey, but it later turned out that some of them were included in the book based on photographs of Felix Bonfils and other photographers of his generation.
