Paul Déroulède [1846-1914] French writer, poet, playwright, military man and statesman. Known for his violent behavior as a representative of the national movement, which tended towards nationalism and anti-Semitism. As a member of the House of Representatives he defended Catholicism, and sometimes in anti-Semitic terms. During the Dreyfus affair, Paul Derold supported the army's position which demanded that Alfred Dreyfus be charged with treason, and even attacked Georges Clemenceau for the Panama Canal bribery affair. He founded the "League of Patriots" whose role was to strengthen French nationalism against its enemies outside.
