The book before us which was published at the height of the Damascus affair sheds light on how the Damascus blood libel was fabricated - the unlawful arrest and torture of innocent Jews, acts of terror by the Sheikh's henchmen in Damascus' Jewish quarter, interventions by England, France and other countries attempting to defend the Jews, support provided by Montefiore to Damascus' Jews amidst the libel, testimonies by Christian figures themselves denouncing the blood libel as an old fabrication never supported by facts, responses to antisemitic claims supported by ancient Jewish literature, and more.
The 1840 Damascus blood libel caused an enormous stir in the Jewish world. Following the disappearance of a Catholic monk and his Muslim servant, key figures in Damascus' Jewish community were accused of kidnapping and murdering them to use their blood for matzah baking. Several suspects died in a cruel investigation led by the Syrian governor and fueled by French consul. The affair ended thanks to Jewish public figures and Western statesmen.
