CONSTITUIÇÕES Synodaes do Bispado de Miranda. Em Lixboa. 1565.

CONSTITUIÇÕES Synodaes do Bispado de Miranda. Em Lixboa: em casa de Francisco Correa, 1565.

[7 de 8], 136 ff.; 250 mm. Copy from the library of Visconde de Azevedo; lacking title page, all the preliminary fólios and f. A1 [f.1], A8 [f.8], S4, S5 e S6 [ff.134-136]; with the exception of the title page, all other missing fólios present with facsimiles made in the private typography of Visconde de Azevedo (late 19th); fol. A4 [f.4] with loss of text, restored; heavly restored on margins; some folios trimmed with loss of titles and folio numbers on top of the pages; water stained.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of these Constitutions of the Bishopric of Miranda, one of the rarest synodal constitutions printed in Portugal at that period. The Diocese of Miranda was created by D. João III in 1545, in the context of the elevation of Miranda do Corvo from a town to a city, and its third Bishop, D. Julião de Alva, convened a Synod in 1563, which resulted in the present constitutions. D. Julião de Alva, Spanish by birth, was confessor of D. Catarina of Austria, having accompanied the monarch when she married D. João III. Appointed Master of the School of the Archdiocese of Évora, he was the first Bishop of the Diocese of Portalegre, being responsible for the mandate for the construction of the Cathedral and whose work began in 1556. In 1560 he is transferred to the Diocese of Miranda, having exercised his ministry until 1564, the year he resigned, retiring to Vila Franca de Xira, where he died in 1570. These Constitutions are very rare. Inocêncio did not manage to see the complete copy in time for the entry on this work published in the 2nd vol and in which he makes some bibliographical mistakes, only corrected in the 9th volume after having managed to examine three copies. The copies of the National Library have flaws, only one more copy being registered at the University of Coimbra. The USTC registers a total of 6 copies, with the possibility of adding a copy from the Library of El-Rei D. Manuel. A true gem of Portuguese 16th century printing and national history.
