CARION (Johann) & TAMARA (Francisco)

Copy lacking fólios A8 and folios of index h8 till the end; lacking most of title page, including device; wormholes on inside margin of some leaves; some restorations on margins; stained; full contemporary calf.

Beautiful Spanish edition of Johann Carion's classic work, translated by Spanish humanist Francisco Tamara. The bibliography is somewhat confusing regarding this title. There are two editions from the same year, one printed in Medina del Campo and the other in Anvers. According to Salvá the first edition has only 195 ff., including preliminary folios and tablets. Palau, however, states that the first edition is by Medina del Campo and has a total of 244 numbered folios and a further 12 unnumbered, which corresponds to this edition. The text of 'Suma...' occupies the first 184 ff. and is printed in Gothic characters. It follows, with its own frontispiece, 'Tabla y Repertorio de todos las personas y cosas memorable that has[n] been, since the beginning of the world, until the present year of MDLIII', occupying folios 185 to 217 and printed in Roman characters. Finally, also with its own frontispiece and Roman print, 'Summa muy breve y succinctissima delos reyes y señores que han sido en España hasta nuestros tiempos, y de otras memorable things', from folio 218 to the end. The final folios are index. Very rare.
