FIRST EDITION. Extremely rare. Francisco de Andrade, from an influential and wealthy family, was born in Lisbon in 1540. Son of Fernão Alvares de Andrade, nobleman of the royal house of D. João III, chief treasurer of the Kingdom and scrivener of the farm, important positions that provided the Francisco de Andrade a socially and economically privileged life. It seems that he studied in Coimbra, having been responsible for the translation of several works in Latin from an early age. Already married and living in Almada, he had a close relationship with Fernão Mendes Pinto and, it seems, was responsible for revising the manuscript of the text of the Peregrinations published 30 years after the author's death. From 1593 he was appointed by King Filipe II chief chronicler of the kingdom, being in charge of writing the chronicles of D. Sebastião, D. João III and D. Henrique, having held the position until the date of his death in 1614 This Chronicle of D. João III, written over almost two decades and published at the author's expense, has some curiosities. One of them is the fact that, according to Rui Loureiro, it dedicates around 80% of its chapters to the East, which makes it more like a Chronicle of the Portuguese deeds in the East than a Chronicle of the reign of King João III, having resorted to various sources, whether existing documents in the Torre do Tombo, of which he was the main guard, or publications such as Lendas da Índia by Gaspar Correia or História do Descobrimento e Conquistas da Índia by Fernão de Castanheda. It is, therefore, an important source for the history of the reign of King João III, in particular of the Portuguese presence in the East during that reign.
