JARDINE (Alexander)
LETTERS from Barbary, France, Spain, Portugal &c. By an English Officer. The Second Edition, corrected. London: Printed for T. Cadell, 1790.

2 v; xvi, 488 pp.; viii, 528, [2] pp.; 220 mm.

Second edition, very rare, of this set of letters/memories sent by Alexander Jardine (1736-1799) was an English soldier and diplomat who spent most of his career in Coruña, staying there between 1779 and 1795. This work is a compilation of his impressions of the places where he was during his diplomatic career. The first volume deals with Morocco, after being entrusted by the British government with a mission to Sultan Mohammed Ibn Abdallah, offering his impressions in the first part. In 1777, he visited France, and his impressions addressed topics such as government, agriculture, commerce, art, women, etc. The second volume deals entirely with his mission in Spain, with several references to Portugal, in particular Braga and Lisbon, referring to politics, education, landscape and Portuguese wine.
