João de Azevedo Coutinho memoirs. Founded in 1880. Rare and interesting. Azevedo Coutinho (1865-1944) became a midshipman in 1882 and, two years later, a midshipman. In 1885, he began his apprenticeship in the Indian Naval Division, which, after finishing, went to Mozambique in a new commission, in 1889. There he commanded the gunboat Cherim, when Serpa Pinto arrived in Africa with the mission of maintaining Portuguese dominion in the region of Shire and Ruo, on the eve of the ultimatum. On the 15th of January 1891, on his return to Lisbon, he was received in apotheosis and the parliament declared him a benefactor of the country. Only 25 years old at the time, his curriculum already included important services for the homeland, having been the head of the surrender of Chilomo, the peacemaker of régulo Gambi and imposing Portuguese domination in the area from Ruo to Milange.
