João Fontes Pereira de Melo (1780-1856), born in Elvas, became an aspiring midshipman in 1800. At the end of the course, he was awarded an extraordinary military-academic award, leading the company of midshipmen in 1803. Continued to serve in the company as substitute lector and master of fencing until 1808. That year he embarked on the frigate Carlota, on a cruise to Gibraltar. In 1810 he moved to the brigantine Gaivota, distinguishing himself for having saved the vessel when it passed, during a storm, within reach of the French batteries, established in Mata Gorda and Trocadero, a service for which he received public praise in the Gazeta of April 10, 1810 , and promotion to the rank of 1st lieutenant. The following year, he served in the Algarve squadron, having saved the schooner Curiosa, which ran aground in Vila Real de Santo António. Decorated for his services rendered, in 1813 he took command of the Algarve squadron, a position he held until 1815. He campaigned on the River Plate and Montevideo, from 1816 to 1818, returning to Lisbon at the end of that year taking command of the brigantine Tejo and three years later that of the corvette Calipso. In 1825 he was appointed commander of the company of midshipmen and in 1834 he entered the Academy of Sciences for this work. In addition to his military and teaching career, he held various public positions, including governor general of Cape Verde, minister of the Navy and Overseas, member of the Overseas Council, etc. Rare and treasured. The work was reprinted in 1856. >
