FIRST EDITION, very rare, by one of the most important voices of Portuguese poetry in the 16th century. Born in Ponte da Barca, and with a life that took him several times from his homeland to Lisbon and back, Diogo Bernardes, according to Aníbal de Castro, "shows himself to be endowed with a flagrant aesthetic eclecticism, assimilating with easy interest and permanent sense of the Renaissance decorum everything he considered likely to give expression to his poetic feeling". The proximity to the court, where, despite the absences to his homeland, he remained linked in the reigns of D. João III to D. Filipe II, allowed him to coexist with the most influential figures of Portuguese culture and politics, among them Sá de Miranda and António Ferreira or the infants D. Duarte and D. Teodósio, influencing his work. The work also acquires importance for Camonean criticism, since several of the texts contained in his works are attributable to Camões, even leading to the accusation by Faria e Sousa that Diogo Bernardes had appropriated texts by other poets. According to Aníbal de Castro, the most recent criticism seems to demonstrate that it was a case of misappropriation "by successive editors of Camões and to the detriment of Bernardes." Extremely rare, valuable and important.
