FIRST EDITION. VERY RARE. Biography of one of the most important figures in Portuguese India at the end of the 16th century. Elected archbishop of Goa in 1594, D. Aleixo de Meneses stood out for his missionary work, but also for his political interventions. Among the correspondence sent to his superior, disagreements about the direction of the government of India by the then Viceroy Matias de Albuquerque are evident, even going so far as to organize a campaign against the Viceroy. After the Viceroy was replaced by D. Francisco da Gama, D. Aleixo accused him of being responsible for the enormous disorder experienced in the territory. And on the missionary level, D. Aleixo was responsible for the action to improve the living conditions of women and the organization of the Synod of Diamper, between the Syrian-Malabar Church and the Roman Catholic Church, a milestone in the attempt to implement and expand Catholicism in India. The author of the biography, Fr. António de Gouveia (1575-1628) was born in Beja, having professed the rule of Sto. Augustine at the Convent of Graça in Lisbon in 1591. Six years later he left for Goa where he became a professor of Theology. Sent to Persia to obtain commercial privileges for Portugal, he was arrested in Rome when these negotiations became known. After escaping, he was imprisoned again, this time by Muslims, only achieving freedom in 1620 through the intervention of Fr. António da Cruz, eventually retiring to the village of Mançanares Menbrilla, where he died.
