First edition of the novel about which Teófilo Braga wrote: “As an artistic process O Primo Basílio is unsurpassable; There will be no romance in European literature that takes advantage of it. There is the safe construction of Balzac, the artistic finishing of Flaubert, the real but imposing rawness of Zola, the complete paintings as in Daudet. The types and situations rival each other” (quote from Dic. EQ, p. 506). And José Régio considered this novel to be Eça's best. Very rare.
