A magazine launched in Porto, A Águia was published following the establishment of the republic, becoming the main intellectual publication of the first half of the 20th century. Over more than two decades of existence, it has known notable names as directors, including: Álvaro Pinto, Teixeira de Pascoaes, António Carneiro, José de Magalhães, Leonardo Coimbra, Hernâni Cidade; Teixeira Rego, Sant'Anna Dionísio, Delfim Santos and Aarão de Lacerda. If in its first series we see it committed to giving the republican revolution a “renewing and fruitful content” in its multiple contributions, it is only in the following series that the magazine presents itself as a spokesperson for the cultural and editorial society «Renascença Portuguesa», about which Pascoaes declared that its two ends would be “national education” and the “advent of the Lusíada Era”. Following its most characteristic phase, the third series exposes a phase of intellectual and literary uncertainty in the project and the brief fourth and fifth series reveal the original project's efforts to survive. In its various issues, the publication gains its prominent place through the collaboration in prose and verse of a large part of the figures of Portuguese literature and intellectuality of the time (Fernando Pessoa, Antero de Figueiredo, Afonso Lopes Vieira, Teixeira de Pascoaes, Alfredo Guimarães, Augusto Casimiro, António Nobre, Jaime Cortesão, Leonardo Coimbra, António Corrêa de Oliveira, among others) and for the publication of an appreciable number of unpublished works by the greatest figures in Portuguese literature of the 19th century. Also the quantity and quality of the portraits and illustrations throughout its issues lend irreplaceable value to this publication.
