A Mosaic of Israel's Traditions: Unity Through Diversity. Esther Shkalim. 2006
Israel is a melting pot of Jewish customs and traditions that have developed over thousands of years of exile. While in the Diaspora, the Jewish people often fused ancient Jewish customs with the culture of their adopted country. Since 1948, millions of Jews have found their way back to the land of their forefathers, bringing with them their sacred customs, often clinging to them as they did in the "old country." With so many people from so many lands rediscovering their homeland, a tidal wave of multifarious Jewish customs have found their way to the Promised Land. A MOSAIC OF ISRAEL'S TRADITIONS explores the Jewish holiday customs practiced by these olim (immigrants). The young people interviewed for this book reveal how immigrating to Israel has impacted these ancient traditions; why some of these traditions have been abandoned, while others are now emerging as part of the customs practiced by the new generation of Israeli Jews. Over 250 illustrations bring to life the unique flavor of the Jewish holiday traditions practiced in many diverse Jewish communities in the Diaspora and in the evolving Jewish community of Israel.
