Handwritten Manuscript of Shetilei Zeitim. Yemen, 1858
Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim with Be’er Hagoleh surrounded by Shetilei Zeitim. Compiled by Rabbi David Mashriki, one of Yemen’s greatest poskim, Shetilei Zeitim is one of the most prominent halachic works produced by Yemenite Jewry. The present large handwritten manuscript includes the entire Orach Chaim.
Rabbi David Mizrahi-Mashriki (1696-1771) was one of the venerable sages in 18th century Yemen. As Rabbi in Sa’ana, he established the Shami nusach hatefillah and was the first of the Yemenite Chachamim to approve the Shulchan Aruch as a reliable source of halachah even in Yemen. His magnum opus Shetilei Zeitim was printed around the Shulchan Aruch in 1744 and very well received by the Jews of Yemen.
The last 20 pages encompass Torat Chacham, a summary of the rulings of Shu”t Peulot Tzaddik by the Maharitz Harav Yichya Ben Yaakov Salah. Torat Chaim was copied into this manuscript since both authors were the two greatest poskim in Yemen at the time. This prestigious work only recently appeared in print.
The last leaf features a 15-year calendar (1858-1873).

Shetilei Zeitim
In his foreword, the author explains that he wrote the sefer since the rulings of the Beit Yosef had become so widespread throughout the Jewish nation that he determined that Yemenite Jewry must likewise adhere to its rulings in addition to those of the Rambam. He was thus the first Yemenite Chacham to compile halachah from the teachings of Achronim as the Levush, Magen Avraham, Taz, Pri Chadash and Knesses Hagedolah in order to clarify the practical halachah. To prevent confusion, he excluded annotations of the Rema that conflict with either the Shulchan Aruch or Yemenite customs.
