Rare. Beautiful Shabbos Song. Lublin (Hanau), 1625

Probably the only extant copy in the world?

“A beautiful song composed by the saintly, pious chassid Moreinu Harav Reuven ben Moreinu Harav Shlomo in honor and sanctity of Shabbos.”

In the lyrics of this song, the composer poignantly warns one to safeguard the honor and sanctity of Shabbos and portrays the many customs and preparations to be done in honor of Shabbos in superb poetry.

In the early part of the 15th century, Jewish composers and songwriters began conveying laws, ethics and moral values  through the medium of Yiddish song. While the majority of these important compositions vanished with time, several lone songs did survive the tragedies of the Chmielnicki massacres in Poland, one of which is this present song.

Small pamphlet with only 3 leaves! Complete

C. Shamrock, esteemed bibliographer of Yiddish literature, has this item recorded, based on a photograph of the only known copy that he found in the library of Dr. Fuchs in the Netherlands, . It is not known where this item is today, as neither the book nor even a photocopy of it, can be found in any of the major libraries around the world.

See: C. Shamrock, Polish printings in Yiddish, within his book Safrut Yiddish B’Polin (p. 113-4). Shamrock states his opinion that the book was printed in Lublin, albeit the border and letters in the book attest that it was printed in Hanau,   where many seforim were printed anonymously including Ta’alumos Chochmah (see below Lot 121).

This poem was written in both Hebrew and Yiddish, stanza by stanza. Yiddish letters are large and clear.

Hanau, circa 1625. First edition. [3] leaves. Page size: 17 cm. Professionally restored at margins. Text fully intact. New leather binding.
