Bowl from the Gatchina Palace Service, St. Petersburg Imperial Manufactory, period Tsar Nicholas II (1894-1917), 1900, centered double eagle with coat of arms of St. George, polychrome painted and ornamental gilding, Ø 14 cm, This service with a version of the double-headed eagle on the imperial state seal used after the Napoleonic wars was commissioned in 1820 and described in archival inventories as ''service with the coat of arms and a golden band''. The service was added to several times and was moved to the Gatchina Palace in about 1855, where it became known as the Gatchina Service. The Gatchina Palace served as the main residence of the imperial family during the reign of Tsar Alexander III (r. 1881-1894) and then of his widow, Tsar dowager Maria Feodorovna. The service was frequently used and during the reign of Nicholas II (1894-1917) additions were ordered again. Lit.: T.N. Nosovich & I.P.
