La Dame aux Camelias (1848) is a novel by Dumas. Also known as Camille. Verdi put music to the story and composed the opera La Traviata (1853).The female protagonist Marguerite Gautier, renamed as Violetta Valery for the opera, was based on Marie Duplessis, the real-life lover of Dumas.
