DE GAULLE CHARLES: (1890-1970) French General and Statesman who led the Free French Forces during World War II. President of the French Republic 1959-69. An early A.L.S., C de Gaulle, on two sides of his printed correspondence card as Commandant of the 19th Battalion de Chasseurs, n.p., 3rd February 1928, to a Colonel, in French. De Gaulle forwards the reply (no longer present) of General Durand for Vidal, adding his own respectful compliments and remarking 'I shall watch events unceasingly and I look forward to meeting you at your headquarters'. A few minor ink stains to the upper left corner, otherwise VG De Gaulle had been promoted to Commandant (Major) on 25th September 1927 and in November of the same year he began a two-year posting as commanding officer of the 19th Battalion de Chasseurs with the occupation forces at Trier.
