LENNOX CHARLES: (1764-1819) 4th Duke of Richmond. Scottish Soldier & Politician, Governor General of British North America 1818-19. A.L.S., Richmond, two pages, 4to, Canterbury, Kent, 28th August 1814, to Macleod. The Duke thanks his correspondent for their note and regrets not having been able to see him before leaving London as he had no time to go to Woolwich, adding that he and his daughters, Mary and Sarah, hope to embark from Deal later that day, further commenting 'I should have preferred staying in England but I trust I go soon enough to secure my return quite at my ease……However I wish to look to the best side and therefore anticipate my return at no very distant period….' VG The Duke of Richmond participated in the Napoleonic Wars and in 1815 was in command of a reserve force in Brussels which was protecting the city in case Napoleon won the Battle of Waterloo. On 15th June, the night before the Battle Quatre Bras, his wife held a ball for his fellow officers. The Duchess of Richmond's glittering celebrations became famous when they were immortalised by William Makepeace Thackeray in Vanity Fair and by Lord Byron in Childe Harold's Pilgrimage.
