NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. An excellent L.S., `Napol´, a bold and good signature example, two pages, 4to, St. Cloud, 19th August 1811, to the Duc de Feltre, Minister of War, in French. A cleanly written military letter, Napoleon ordering with precision where to send mortars, stating in part ´Monsieur le Duc de Feltre, gather 12 mortars at the Imperial fortress on the Isle of Cadzand, considering that - 6 are in place - 3 that you will take from the batteries between Ostende and Dunkerke - 3 that you will take from the Ambleteuse harbour… You will gather 18 at Flessingue (Vlissingen), counting that - 4 are there - 2 which are at Anvers (Antwerp) - 7 from Perry close to Havre - 4 from the west battery of Ambleteuse - 1 from the battery tower of Boulogne.´ Napoleon further explains in part his goals, saying `Because I need a large number of mortars, make them melt down 30 at Liege, 30 at Indre, and 30 at the Marine foundry close to Grenoble. Make them do of the largest kind so that they will throw the bombs as far as possible. You will take for the Isle of Hyeres those made at the foundry close to Grenoble…´ An interesting military content letter. Very small creasing to the bottom left corner, with two pinholes corresponding to a former receipt attached, otherwise VG Henri Jacques Guillaume Clarke (1765-1818) Marshal of France in 1816, one of six created under King Louis XVIII from 1815-24. Duc de Feltre and Minister of War under Napoleon.
