KLAPROTH JULIUS HEINRICH: (1783-1835) German Linguist, Ethnographer, Explorer and Orientalist. His works are credited with the turning of East Asian Studies into scientific disciplines. A.L.S., J.H.Klaproth, two pages, square 4to, Paris, 23rd December 1819, to a Count, in French. Klaproth explains to his correspondent `France promised to the learned world, a century ago, the publication of a Chinese dictionary. This promise was fulfilled in 1813, and copies of this dictionary are kept and distributed by the interior ministry. However, scientists have not expressed a favourable critic, and it´s numerous defects have needed a supplement publication.´ further stating `I am honoured to offer to Your Excellency a copy of the supplement which has recently been printed thanks to the magnificence of His Majesty King of Prussia..´ Klaproth offers three hundred copies to his correspondent, completing this way the same number of dictionary copies owned by the ministry, and reports on the scientists article published by the Journal des Savants, saying `The dictionary of P. Barile or M. Deguignes cannot be considered completed unless the necessary supplement is joined to.´ With blank integral leaf. Overall age wear with few ink stains not affecting text or signature.
