LA FAYETTE GILBERT DU MOTIER: (1757-1834) Marquis de La Fayette. French Aristocrat and Military Officer. Close to George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, La Fayette fought in the American Revolutionary War. He later became a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830. A good and clean L.S., Lafayette, one page, 4to, Paris, 21st August 1832, to Deputy Emmanuel de Las Cases, in French. Lafayette refers to cholera pandemic and states in part `I would have been very pleased my dear colleague to attend your scientific session which topic has since long awaken my strong interest, but I am obliged to return to la Grange where we are surrounded by cholera, although the main house and farm have not been affected yet. Our Seine-et-Marne department has been harshly treated by this plague..´ With address leaf, postmarked. Small area of paper loss to the address leaf as a result of the opening, otherwise VG La Fayette refers to La Grange which was a fortified castle, Grande-Bleneau, in the Courpalay commune of the Seine-et-Marne. It belonged to Adrienne de Noailles, wife of La Fayette who lived there from 1802 until his death. The cholera pandemic of 1832 killed over a hundred thousand persons in France only.
