Griffith, together with Charles Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, founded United Artists enabling them to control their own interests rather than depending on studios. A good T.L.S., D.W.Griffith, one page, 4to, Los Angeles, 23rd May 1918, on his personal printed stationery, to Mrs. H.C. de Mille, Committee Benefit Dance. Griffith states in part `Have advised all who can to be on hand the evening of June 8th. If I can dig myself out from under the ever threatening sword of Damocles in the shape of scenarios shall be there with jingling spurs.´ VG
