PAPINI GIOVANNI: (1881-1956) Italian Essayist, Novelist, Philosopher and Journalist. A very controversial literary figure. The earliest representative of Italian pragmatism. Papini moved from one political or philosophical position to another, converting from atheism to Catholicism, also becoming Fascist while feeling aversion to Nazism. A good A.L.S., `G. Papini´, four pages, 8vo, Arezzo, 6th August 1918, to Casella, in Italian. Papini explains that `I had to leave for Rome hastily, and I did not remember that I was in debt with you. I am ashamed… Excuse-me, really, you understand that being such a small sum, my behaviour has been unintentional..´, further commenting `I have heard that Ars Nova died. Alfredo Casella (1883-1947) Founder and Director of Italian journal Ars Nova. Casella was an important protagonist of Italian musical and intellectual life of that time. In 1916 he founded the ''Societa Italiana di Musica Moderna'', Ars Nova being the official mouthpiece of the ''Societa''. Ars Nova was an Italian journal which was irregularly published in Rome from 1917 to 1919, mainly due to difficulties related to high cost of paper. The Journal closed from May to November 1918.
